History

First held in 1956, the Art and Antiques Fair was considered to be the leading event of its kind in Germany, until it had to leave the Haus der Kunst towards the end of the 1980s. In 2003, Konrad Bernheimer and his Munich-based colleagues launched “Munich Highlights” as a “provisional solution”. Art dealers and gallery owners around the Odeonsplatz shared their spaces with colleagues from other countries and invited the public to an artistic promenade through central Munich.

In October 2010, 52 art dealers successfully presented the first HIGHLIGHTS International Art Fair in the centre of Munich. The fair’s traditional home, the Haus der Kunst, gained a convincing new look with a restrained and modern interior. The German weekly “Die Zeit” headed its review: “Off to Munich! Munich Highlights is Germany’s newest and – at the first go – its best art fair.”* HIGHLIGHTS got off to a stupendous start by raising the bar for standards and setting the highest criteria for quality; in the three years of its existence it has taken up a leading position among German art fairs.

In the fair’s fourth year, HIGHLIGHTS begins a new era: this autumn, from 8th–13th November 2013, it will be held at a new location in the Munich Residenz.
